POWERING INTELLIGENCE

Energy Infrastructure for the Intelligence Age

Artificial intelligence may be digital, but the infrastructure that supports it is physical—and that infrastructure begins with power. WP-02 examines the energy systems required to build and operate intelligence at scale, and the emerging relationship between generation, the electric grid, energy storage, flexible computing demand, and speed-to-power.

What WP-02 Examines

The Power Requirement

Artificial intelligence depends upon enormous and increasingly concentrated amounts of electricity. WP-02 examines how the growth of AI data centers is changing the scale, location, reliability, and speed requirements placed upon energy infrastructure.

The 150-MW Problem

WP-02 uses a recurring PROMETHEUS case study: an AI campus facing a 150-megawatt power deficit. The problem illustrates a central challenge of the Intelligence Age—not simply whether sufficient electricity exists, but whether reliable power can be assembled and delivered where it is needed, when it is needed, and at the speed required by rapidly expanding compute infrastructure.

A Layered Energy Portfolio

WP-02 examines power not as a choice between a single favored technology, but as a coordinated portfolio of generation, grid supply, storage, flexible demand, and other energy resources. The challenge is to combine these resources into a reliable system capable of supporting large-scale computing while adapting to changing demand and infrastructure constraints.

The Energy Operating System

As AI infrastructure grows, the challenge increasingly becomes one of coordination. WP-02 introduces the concept of an Energy Operating System—a framework for coordinating generation, storage, grid supply, flexible demand, and other energy resources as an integrated portfolio rather than managing each independently.

Speed-to-Power

In the Intelligence Age, the availability of electricity is only part of the problem. The time required to secure generation, transmission, interconnection, permitting, equipment, and reliable delivery can determine where—and how quickly—new AI infrastructure can be built. WP-02 therefore examines speed-to-power as an increasingly important infrastructure constraint.

Building the Energy System

WP-02 ultimately asks what kind of energy system can support intelligence infrastructure at scale. The answer extends beyond any single generation technology. It requires coordinated investment in generation, transmission, storage, grid infrastructure, flexible demand, and the institutions capable of bringing those resources online fast enough to meet a rapidly changing computational economy.

PROMETHEUS WP-02: Powering Intelligence examines one of the defining infrastructure challenges of the Intelligence Age: how to provide reliable, scalable, and rapidly deployable energy for increasingly powerful computational systems. From the 150-MW Problem to the Energy Operating System, WP-02 explores how generation, grids, storage, flexible demand, and infrastructure coordination can become part of a new energy architecture for intelligence.
